Free Candy AI Alternatives That Don't Lock Everything Behind a Paywall

Candy AI isn't really free. You can make an account and build one companion, but Candy's own terms cap free users at about 5 messages before the upgrade screen. If you want a Candy AI alternative that's actually free, the best ones I tested are JOI AI for voice, Nectar AI for 15 free messages and 10 free images a day, and AI Virtual Love if you want text chat with no cap at all.

I tested seven sites from fresh accounts with no card attached, counted messages until each free plan stopped, and then read the pricing pages. Daniel Okafor, our pricing reviewer, checked the math. Is Candy AI free? What $0 gets you

Only barely. Section 9 of Candy AI's Terms of Service says a free user "may generally send a maximum of 5 messages to AI Characters." Candy's help center describes the same free account: 5 chat messages across all characters, one custom character and one generated image. That's the whole allowance, and it doesn't reset each day.

You'll see other numbers online. Older reviews quote 15, 30, 50 or even 75 free messages, and one guide says 5 a day. Those figures seem to come from signup promotions and older versions of the plan. The 5-message limit is the one Candy documents, and it's what I got.

Where the Candy AI paywall hit in my test

I signed up on desktop Chrome, built a companion with the avatar builder and started a casual chat. The avatar tools are good, and the first replies were quick and in character. On my fifth message the reply came back with a Premium prompt, and I couldn't send anything else.

Before that I tried the voice button and the photo request. Voice was locked from the start, and my one free image used up the image allowance. So the free account shows you what Candy looks like, but it doesn't let you find out whether you like talking to it. That's the main reason people search for sites like Candy AI: five messages isn't enough to judge memory, tone or how a character holds up over a longer chat.

The other complaint I hear is about tokens. Premium makes text unlimited, but images, voice notes, calls and video all draw from the same pool of 100 tokens a month. Heavy media users end up buying top-ups, and reviewers who track their spend put a realistic monthly bill well above the sticker price.

What Candy AI costs if you do pay

Candy has one paid tier, Premium, sold on three terms. Here's what the Candy AI subscriptions page showed me in October 2026. Another recent pricing review listed $5.99, $9.99 and $12.99 for the same terms, and Candy's July pricing was close to that, so treat these as a moving target.

JOI AI is built around voice, which is the one thing Candy's free plan won't let you touch at all. My fresh account got a run of starter messages in the 10-20 range and a short voice sample before the upgrade screen. That's still short, but it's two to four times what Candy allows, and I heard the voice before deciding.

The replies were fast and kept my character's tone. In the romance chat it picked up a detail from five messages earlier without me repeating it. It runs on JOI's Neuron credits: roughly 4 per text reply and up to 120 per photo, so text goes a long way and pictures don't.

On price it's close to Candy. The yearly plan works out to about $5.08 a month (around $60.95 billed once), and month to month is $17.77. A three-month option sits near $8.89 a month.

Nectar AI has the most useful free plan of the paid-first apps here. You get 15 messages and 10 image generations every day, and both reset. Over a week of testing that added up to about 100 messages and 70 images for $0, which is more than Candy gives in total by a wide margin.

The images were the surprise. Nectar keeps a character's face and style steady from one photo to the next, which is the thing I liked most about Candy. The catch is memory: on the free plan it only lasts for the session, so a story you start Monday is mostly forgotten by Tuesday.

Premium is $9.99 a month, or about $5 a month billed yearly, and adds long-term memory plus 6,000 messages and 600 photo messages a month.

If the avatars were what drew you to Candy, OurDream AI is the closest match on image quality, but only once you pay. Its help center says images and videos need a subscription, and a free account gets a small starter allowance of chat messages, each one costing a DreamCoin. In my test that lasted a little longer than Candy's 5 messages, enough to judge the writing.

On Premium the photo quality was the best I tested, and video generation is included. OurDream also has iOS and Android apps, like Candy.

It costs more if you pay: $9.99 a month on the yearly plan ($119.88) or $19.99 month to month, each with 1,000 DreamCoins per cycle. Video eats coins fast.

The writing was stronger than Candy's in long scenes. My slow-burn setup kept its location and mood across the session, though the free chips for pictures went in a few requests.

It's text-first, so don't expect Candy-style photos. What you get is uncensored roleplay, custom characters and memory that carried my test character's name and backstory into the next session. Replies were a bit slower than JOI's at busy hours.

This is what each site gave a brand-new account with no payment method. "Daily" means the allowance resets, which matters more than the starting number.

What a year costs if you upgrade anyway

Most lists skip this part: Candy's yearly plan is one of the cheapest here. At $47.88 for 12 months it undercuts JOI, Lovescape and OurDream. The weak part is the free plan. Daniel worked out what each yearly plan costs in total.

How to choose the right free alternative

• You want to talk, not type: pick JOI AI. It's the only one here that lets you hear the voice before paying.
• You want photos without paying: Nectar AI gives 10 images a day. OurDream AI makes better ones, but only on Premium.
• You want to pay nothing, ever: AI Virtual Love for unlimited chat, or AIGFLove if you don't want to make an account.
• You care about longer stories: Lovescape writes the best scenes, but plan on paying for it.
• You liked Candy and just want more of it: the 12-month Premium at $3.99 a month is cheaper than most alternatives. Turn off auto-renew if you're unsure.

One more thing to check on any site: whether the allowance resets daily. A one-time bundle of 20 messages is worth less than 15 a day, and that difference only shows up after the first session.
